le futur - the future

Using the future tense in French is one of the simplest constructions to learn. First of all, for the most part, you are going to keep your whole infinitive. Then, the endings that you add on are also familiar. They are much like the verb avoir.

exemple: voyager (to travel)
je voyagerai
tu voyageras
il/elle voyagera
nous voyagerons
vous voyagerez
ils/elles voyageront

So, for -er verbs, you keep the whole infinitive, then you add the endings.

another example: finir (to finish)
je finirai
tu finiras
il/elle finira
nous finirons
vous finirez
ils/elles finiront

For -ir verbs, you still keep the whole infinitive, then add the endings.

finally, an example for an -re verb

vendre (to sell)
je vendrai
tu vendras
il/elle vendra
nous vendrons
vous vendrez
ils/elles vendront

You can see that for -re verbs, you have to drop the 'e' at the end of the infinitive before you add the endings. This actually makes things pretty standard. For the future tense, you go to the 'r' then add the endings.

Some of the most common verbs, though, use an odd stem for the future tense, even though they use the same endings as the examples I've already given.

avoir (to have)

être ( to be)

aller (to go)

faire (to do or to make)

j'aurai
tu auras
il/elle aura
nous aurons
vous aurez
ils/elles auront

je serai
tu seras
il/elle sera
nous serons
vous serez
ils/elles seront

j'irai
tu iras
il/elle ira
nous irons
vous irez
ils/elles iront

je ferai
tu feras
il/elle fera
nous ferons
vous ferez
ils/elles feront
